A TENS Unit Provides Pain Relief in a Small Portable Package

If you’ve never tried a TENS unit, you may be surprised to discover the powerful results this simple non-invasive drug-free device can deliver. For many patients this unit can provide measurable relief from the chronic pain caused by muscle soreness, tension, spasms, arthritis, or just aches and pains.

Many of our patients have found that using a TENS helps them reduce pain and discomfort but doesn’t cure it.  We like to call it an “electronic aspirin”.   The treatment may be repeated every few hours for continual pain management.  TENS units are used in conjunction with chiropractic care and physical rehabilitation programs for maximum benefit.

How does a TENS unit work?

The name itself provides a clue. The word TENS is an acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.  The small device, which is about the size of a deck of cards, runs on batteries and has 4 electrodes with pads that attach to your body.  TENS is believed to work by two different mechanisms.  First, electrical stimulation of the nerve fibers can block a pain signal from being carried to the brain. If the signal is blocked, pain is not perceived. Secondly, the body has its own mechanism for suppressing pain. It does this by releasing natural chemicals called endorphins in the brain which act as analgesics.  By effectively managing pain without drugs, TENS allows many people with chronic pain conditions to resume daily activity.  You can control the amount of stimulation, simply by adjusting a dial.  Lightweight and easy to carry, the unit comes with a handy clip so it can be attached to a belt or waistband. This allows it to be worn throughout the day, easily hidden beneath clothes.

Our office staff can help you find out if your insurance carrier covers the cost of the TENS unit.  So if you’d like to experience the drug-free pain relief that a TENS unit can provide let us know on your next visit.
