Preventing Osteoporosis Naturally

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones become brittle and fragile, resulting in poor posture, back pain, neck pain, fracture, and even death.  However, osteoporosis is NOT a normal sign of aging, but a preventable illness.

Osteoporosis is running rampant in our aging population, especially among women.  Consequently, drug companies have been bending over backwards trying to figure out a way to stop bone loss with pills.  However, most drugs have been shown to make the problem worse by causing an increased risk of fracture because these concoctions prevent the body from making new bone.

Furthermore, other drugs, such as acid reflux medications and corticosteroids, actually CAUSE osteoporosis with prolonged use.  So I wouldn’t put my hope in medicine to fix the osteoporosis epidemic, if I were you.  It’s much better to prevent getting osteoporosis in the first place.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to NATURALLY increase your bone mass without taking harmful (and expensive) medications that are not up to the task.

Use Your Bones

The body is a pretty amazing machine.  The more you use it, the better it works…provided you don’t overdo it.  Bones respond to the forces you put on them.  If you sit around all day, your bones get lazy and slow down rebuilding.  If you participate in regular weight-bearing exercise, you are blowing an air horn at your bones, telling them to quit slacking and keep building!

Examples of weight bearing exercise include walking, hiking, weight training, aerobics, yoga, and golf.

Feed Your Bones

Much like muscles, your bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt.  Much like our porcine friends the Three Little Pigs found out, the quality of the home you live in is directly related to the quality of the building material.  If you give the body what it needs to properly build bone, you can dramatically improve your bone health.

According to natural health expert Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, Strontium is a nutritional supplement that is showing promise in helping prevent osteoporosis.  Strontium is a trace element found in sea water and soil.  Strontium is patented and has been available in Europe for nearly a decade for the treatment of osteoporosis.  Although a prescription form is not available in the United States (probably because it is too natural for the pharmaceutical companies to mess with it) it can be found as a supplement.
