Chiropractic Care For Headaches

Most people who suffer from chronic headaches usually reach straight for the aspirin. While drugs can relieve the symptoms of a headache, they aren’t doing anything to stop the cause. In fact, a frequent and often overlooked cause of headaches is the malfunction of the spinal bones in the neck and upper back.

What can you do to prevent headaches?

• If you spend your days sitting at a desk, aim to take a break and stretch every half hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.

• Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches, so engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics.

• Avoid clenching your teeth. This results in stress at the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to irritation and a form of tension headaches.

• Drink at least eight 8oz glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

What can a doctor of chiropractic do?

• Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system.

• Give advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises, and ways to relax. This advice should help to relieve irritation in the joints and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.

Research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck. It can also have significantly fewer side effects than taking a pill, and can provide longer-lasting relief from tension-type headaches.

So if aspirin or other medications aren’t relieving your pain, or if you have headaches frequently, chiropractic care may be the answer!
